The Amiata donkey

HELLO, MY NAME IS AIR!

I am an Amiata donkey and live with my big family at the wildlife park!

I take my name from Monte Amiata because I am originally from this mountainous area, even if my ancestors probably came from ancient Phoenicia! I have a mouse-coloured coat and, if you look at me from above, you will notice the dark hair in the shape of a cross on my shoulders, which continues with a dark stripe that runs down my back all the way to my tail. My legs also have some black zebra-like stripes on them.

I am very intelligent and sociable, which is why I am used in mountain trekking and onotherapy, a kind of pet therapy involving donkeys.

Unfortunately, the Amiata Donkey is an indigenous breed that is under threat of extinction. Thus, for many years, the Wildlife Park has been undertaking a conservation project to protect the genetic heritage of this great, humble friend who has accompanied humans throughout history, often carrying out strenuous work.

Curiosity: Amiata donkey milk is low in fat and rich in Vitamin D, calcium and protein, which has highly antibacterial properties, the reason it is given to new-born babies who are allergic to cow’s milk.
